Nose jobs surgeries carry with them risks and complications. This is despite the fact that rhinoplasty procedures are some of the safest cosmetic surgery in the world. But such is life in the realm of plastic surgery that there are always risks no matter how minute.
Since incisions will be made and stitches performed at the end of the nose job, there is a risk of infection. Infections on the nose are very painful with swelling. Antibiotics should clear all but the most stubborn infections over time.
There is a chance that the post-operatative nose may be deformed. This is in no part the fault of the plastic surgeon or the procedure itself. This normally happens when the patients nose has very thin cartilage.
As with all procedures that require the use of anasthetic, there may be allergic reactions that may be dangerous for the client.
Skin necrosis from nose job procedures are heightened in smokers. It is normally recommended that the patient quit smoking before undergoing the surgery as the risks of skin necrosis may be too great. Although not common, scarring can occur. The stitches on the nose are placed in such a way that the scar remains on the inside of the nostril instead of the outside.
Nerve damage is another possibility as it is with all plastic surgery procedures. There may be some loss of smell but this is usually only temporary. Make sure you know what you're getting into as well as having the risks explained to you in detail. More importantly, ensure that the plastic surgeon is properly certified as successful nose jobs are greatly enhanced by this factor. Also see, Septoplasty.
