Considering how the face is most important window to others, it is important to know the risks involved when undergoing facelift plastic surgery. There are a variety of things that can go wrong during and after facelift cosmetic surgery but the risks are more or less the same as other conventional types of surgeries. Full facelifts usually have the potential to bring about more complications over a mini facelift, browlifts and necklifts.
Complications that arise after surgery are not life-threatening and are almost alwas short term complications. Smokers that undergo facelift cosmetic surgery have a higher than normal chance of skin necrosis and blistering. Other than this special point, the usual complications are :-
Scarring - There will be some scarring from the facelift, this is normal. The plastic surgeon that performed the surgery will attempt to hide these scars as best as he/she can. These scars are permanent.
Infection - There is always a risk of infection with any type of surgery cosmetic or otherwise. If proper procedures are followed, the chances of infection are very slim. Infections cause redness around the infected area as well as swelling. If an infected area is found, doctors will prescribe antibiotics immediately.
Hematoma - Hematoma is a condition where blood pools beneath the skin. This causes swelling and is very painful. Depending on the amount of blood collecting in the area, the doctor may or may not choose to drain it out from under the skin.
Nerve damage - It is possible for nerves to be damaged during the facelift plastic surgery. Nerve damage is permanent and will cause numbness on the affected areas.
Other complications from facelifts include heavy scarring (Keloids), facial weakness and paralysis, anasthesia complications, skin discolorations and irregularities, slow healing and swelling.
While the list of complications above are quite extensive, it should be noted that they are rare especially while in the care of a capable plastic surgeon. Choose your plastic surgeons with the utmost care and find out all you can about them.
