Collagen - What Is Collagen?

Collagen Microscopic ImageCollagen is a protein that has the honor of being the most abundant in mamals. It can be said to be the glue that holds our body together as it is found mainly in connective tissue.

Collagen is a fibrous proteins that serves to give cells structure. Its primary use in the world of health beauty is to maintain elasticity and strength in our skins. As we age, the body slowly loses collagen over time and begins to produce lower amounts, giving rise to wrinkles. As such, many collagen based products have emerged on the market as a substitute for cosmetic surgery. Collagen can be viewed as the support structure for our skin. As we lose collagen, facial lines begin to appear from the daily expression our face goes through. In younger people, enough collagen remains intact to provide elasticity, thereby allowing the skin to retain its shape. There are a few types of collagen products out on the market and they range from collagen pills to collagen facial creams. The most common (and most effective) method of collagen delivery is via an injection. The collagen used in these products com from one of three sources, bovine, marine collagen or human. While bovine collagen is the most commonly used and the most cost effective, the chances of an allergic reaction is also higher when compared to human collagen. See Collagen Risks.

To the right is a before and after photograph showing the differences that can be had with collagen treatment. There are two questions that need to be asked with regards to collagen products. The first is straightforward, do they work? Yes, particularly collagen injections. Collagen is injected into areas where the skin has lost enough collagen to produce wrinkles. This treatment makes the skin seem fuller and plumper.

The second question that must be asked is, how long do collage injections last? It varies. It can last anywhere from a few months all the way up to a year in extreme cases. The procedure is also non invasive like regular plastic surgery.
