As with most things in life, you can't have the sweet without the sour. This is particularly true in the world of cosmetic surgery. Everything from botox, plastic surgery, facelifts etc have a potential downside to them. So it comes as no surprise that something as uninvasive as collagen treatment can produce side effects.
Some patients will experience allergic reactions from collagen treatment. Roughly two percent of all collagen patients are susceptible to these side effects. It is not known why some patients are more susceptible to them over others. Known side effects are mostly mild in nature and normally clear up in a few months. These side effects include :-
Allergic Reactions - By far the biggest downside to collagen use are potential allergic reactions. Why some patients have allergic reactions are not known. Before undergoing collagen injections, doctors normally perform skin tests on patients to check for any allergic reactions. A typical allergic reaction would be peeling skin, reddening of the skin and itchiness around the injected areas.
Infection - Whenever any kind of foreign substance in injected into the body, the patient runs the risk of infection. Improper injection procedures as well as applying facial masks or creams over the injected are some of the causes of injection. The other most obvious cause for infection during collagen treatment is needle itself. It is recommended to wait at least a full day before applying creams around the treated areas.
Scarring - Scarring is rare but can happen. People with highly sensitive skin are suspect. Abcesses, whil equally rare, is a very rare possibility as well.
Pain and Swelling - A very common side-effect from collagen injections are pains and swelling after treatment. The pain and swelling usually subsides a few hours after treatment. If the pain intensifies and doesn't clear up it may be a sign of looking infection. Patients that undergo collagen injections for the first time are very suspect.
Needle Marks - The last side-effect from collagen treatment is cosmetic in nature. Sometimes it takes some time for the needle marks to go away. Also, the more injections the patient recieves over a large area, the more noticable the puncture marks are. They become more apparent if the skin swells (which is common).
These risks are from bovine and human collagen usage. No side-effects are known from using marine collagen at this point.
