A completely risk-free plastic surgery procedure does not exist. The same applies to breast augmentation. Listed here are important known complications and risks that can arise due to breast cosmetic surgery.
By far the most common complication from breast augmentation is something called Capsular Contracture. Capsular contracture is a result of the bodies immune system attempting to seal off a foreign object (The breast implant) with collagen fibers. This ends up squeezing the breast implant which results in a distorted breast implant. This condition is usually quite painful for the recipient as well. It is though capsular contracture is a result of bacterial infection, hematoma or leaking silicone gel from a ruptured breast implant. Corrective surgery usually follows with the implant being removed and replaced or the breast implant filling being replaced. Further capsular contracture's may occur in the future beyond corrective surgery. Corrective surgery depends on the severity of the contracture and is graded in four stages. Grades 1 and 2 usually require no surgery as the breast look entirely normal albeit a bit firmer than usual. Grades 3 and 4 require surgery. Grade 3 capsular contracture is treated by releasing the capsule. Grade 4 may require entire replacement of the breast implant.
Hematoma can result after breast augmentation. Hematoma is a pooling of blood around the implant that can contribute to the chance of infection and capsular contracture. Large pools of hematoma are surgically drained.
Breast implant ruptures and leaks side effects include pain and tenderness around the breast area, numbness and swelling as well as an obvious decrease in breast size.
Numbness of the nipple can occur after breast augmentation surgery. A study conducted puts the chances of permanant numbness of the nipple around 15%. Infection occurs extremely rarely. However, if an infection develops, the breast implant is usually removed. Infections usually occur no more than a month after breast augmentation surgery. Implant Shift/Displacement occurs when the breast implant shifts position. Sometimes the shift may be large, sometimes it is unnoticable. Large breast implants usually have a higher chance of displacement. Correctve surgery may be required in such instances. Other complications include scarring, nerve damage, delayed healing, rippling and sloshing.
