Breast reduction plastic surgery is the least performed type of breast modification performed since most women look to breast augmentation instead. It is also one of the few breast cosmetic surgery that is chosen by males for a variety of reasons. Males with afflicted with Gynecomastia normally develop enlarged mammary glands at some point in their lives. Men (mainly bodybuilders) who were steroid abusers in the past may also develop enlarged mammary glands.
However, breast reduction is typically performed on the fairer sex. Women that suffer from Gigantomastia make up the vast majority of clients in this area. Gigantomastia is a condition where an abnormal quantity of progesterone and estrogen are produced. This causes abnormally enlarged breasts (up to 20 pounds) that can cause a variety of problems that include headaches, back pains, neck problems as well as difficulty with breathing. There is no cure to this condition and the only treatment lies in breast reduction.
Breast reduction procedures are not recommended to women who are breast feeding and such surgery is only performed on fully developed breasts. Breast reduction is achieved by removing glandular tissue, skin and fat from the breasts after a small incision is made. Procedures also take into consideration the function of the breasts in the long run such as the ability to breast feed.
For women, breast reduction surgery typically leave their breasts smaller, firmer and lighter. It is rumored that recipients of breast reduction make up some of the most satisfied customers as the mental and emotional burdens associated with abnormally enlarged breasts are alleviated.
There are some risks associated with breast reduction surgeries however. The most important risk for women is the ability to breast feed. Because of the disruption to the lactiferous duct (responsible for carrying milk to the nipple) some patients may have difficulty breast feeding in the future. Other complications include permanent scarring from the procedure. However, plastic surgeons have the ability to mask such scars to the point they are unnoticable. Fluid retention, assymetry and changes in nipple sensation are some other reported side effects from breast redcution surgery.
A bonus for those that opt for breast reduction is the reduced likelyhood of breast cancer in the future. Since breast cancer affects breast tissue, those with lower amounts of breast tissue have a lower chance of getting breast cancer.
